Usage rights

What are usage rights?

Usage rights define where, how long, and in what format a brand is allowed to reuse content a creator produced — for example, on the brand’s own social channels, in paid ads, or on a website.

What do usage rights mean in influencer marketing?

Without an explicit usage rights clause, a brand technically only has permission to use content the way it was originally agreed — reusing a creator’s video in a paid ad campaign without that right spelled out is a common source of disputes.

What should creators watch out for with usage rights?

  • Always specify a time limit (e.g. 6 or 12 months) unless you’re intentionally selling perpetual rights for a higher fee.
  • Specify the channels covered — organic social, paid social ("whitelisting"), website, print — since each is a separate right with separate value.
  • Charge more for broader or longer usage; usage rights are a negotiable, priced line item, not a default freebie.
